You may not think there’s a criteria for riding hoverboards, which is understandable since most people can just hop on and ride, but there are standards in place for different models. Generally, when you’re shopping for hoverboards, you want to take into consideration two factors to make sure you’re buying a self-balancing scooter that’s sized well for you:
1. Select an appropriate wheel size:
4.5″ wheel – best for kids and some teens
6.5″ wheel – best for kids and teens
8″ wheel – good for teens and adults
10″ wheel – good for some teens and most adults
2. Make sure you’re within the weight limits for the model:
While most hoverboards will have the same weight limit based on wheel size, you should pay attention to each manufacturer’s parameters before you purchase. Most hoverboards will have a weight range of 40 lbs. to 220 lbs. While there may be some wiggle room with the weight limits, you are increasing your risk if you are outside the manufacturer’s recommendations. It may be more difficult for you to maneuver the hoverboard (this is especially true for children who are under the weight limit), leaving you at a higher risk for an accident. If you’re over the hoverboard weight limit, it may reduce the scooter’s performance and strain the battery. You could also risk damaging the hoverboard.
We’ve broken down some of the best hoverboard models by their weight limits so you can easily find the right ride for you.
