You may not think there’s a criteria for riding hoverboards, which is understandable since most people can just hop on and ride, but there are standards in place for different models. Generally, when you’re shopping for hoverboards, you want to take into consideration two factors to make sure you’re buying a self-balancing scooter that’s sized well for you:
1. Select an appropriate wheel size:
4.5″ wheel – best for kids and some teens
6.5″ wheel – best for kids and teens
8″ wheel – good for teens and adults
10″ wheel – good for some teens and most adults
2. Make sure you’re within the weight limits for the model:
While most hoverboards will have the same weight limit based on wheel size, you should pay attention to each manufacturer’s parameters before you purchase. Most hoverboards will have a weight range of 40 lbs. to 220 lbs. While there may be some wiggle room with the weight limits, you are increasing your risk if you are outside the manufacturer’s recommendations. It may be more difficult for you to maneuver the hoverboard (this is especially true for children who are under the weight limit), leaving you at a higher risk for an accident. If you’re over the hoverboard weight limit, it may reduce the scooter’s performance and strain the battery. You could also risk damaging the hoverboard.

Chic 4.5″ Hoverboard for Kids
Weight Limits: 44 lbs. to 132 lbs.
Currently the smallest hoverboard available, it’s no surprise that the Chic 4.5″ hoverboard has the lowest weight limit on the market. Designed for kids and teens, it’s a great entry level hoverboard. While some petite adults will fall under the 132 lb weight maximum, this is a model best left for the young folks.
The ergonomic design makes this model easy to ride and kids pick it up pretty quickly. It also has all the features parents look for, like safety certifications and LED safety lights, plus it’s water resistant. The simple design of the Chic hoverboard may not be as interesting as other models with flashy features that raise the price, but it’s a perfect beginner self balancing scooter.

You’ll notice that the design on this self-balancing personal transporter is a little different than other hoverboards. It features a padded knee bar which helps the rider control the scooter more easily. This design is definitely suited more for mobility assistance and getting around rather than doing tricks. It’s great for teens and young adults who need help getting around campus (if it’s not against the law) and seniors who want a sportier mobility option.

Hoversboards for Over 300 lbs.
SWAGTRON T6 Off-Road Hoverboard
Weight Limits: 44 lbs (20kg) – 420 lbs (191 kg)
Swagtron has been an industry leader for hoverboards, so it’s not surprising that they created one of the first hoverboards to accommodate riders over 300 lbs. Their maximum weight recommendation of 420 lbs. is currently unmatched by the competition. They set out to design a rugged, off-road hoverboard for riding through mud, grass, and gravel. The heavy-duty design (and higher price point) means it works for riders of many sizes, unlike some of the cheaper hoverboards. This self-balancing scooter is great for assisted mobility or riding for fun. Plus the minimum weight limit of 44 lbs. means you can share it with the rest of the family as well.
